ULTRAsomething > Before going to Tofino, we spent some time exploring Nanaimo, where Karen's figure casts a sinister presence in our decidedly Lynchian budget-priced hotel.
ULTRAsomething > The reason for our budget accommodations in Nanaimo was this -- The Wickaninnish Inn. This renowned hotel, perched on the rocks overlooking Chesterman Beach in Tofino, BC would be our new home for the weekend.
ULTRAsomething > In spite of the improved accommodations, this rain-drenched photo, taken on Chesterman Beach in Tofino, bears a strikingly thematic resemblance to the Lynchian hotel hallway photo -- right down to the backlit figure of Karen.
ULTRAsomething > And speaking of Karen, here she is enjoying a break from the Tofino rains.
ULTRAsomething > Dedication. A lone, knock-kneed surfer ponders his motivations on Chesterman Beach in Tofino.
ULTRAsomething > Karen, too, is pondering something on the Tofino shoreline.
ULTRAsomething > Sea anemone!
ULTRAsomething > Tidepools abound along Chesterman Beach in Tofino.
ULTRAsomething > The next day, we took a 90 minute boat trip up the coast. If the waves don't get you, the Orcas might.
ULTRAsomething > Destination? Hot Springs Cove. A pilgrimage made by many seal-like humans -- all eager to enter a tiny fissure and soak in pools fed by a steaming, hot waterfall.
ULTRAsomething > The most amazing thing about Hot Springs Cove is its location -- mere meters from the treacherously crashing waves of the Pacific ocean. Waves that, at 20' high, pound the jagged rocks surrounding this desolate point and wreak havoc upon any small craft (like ours) that attempts to maneuver its way to this little sliver of heaven.
